UCSF Global Cancer Program

Donald and Sarah Pearline receive the award on Rachel’s behalf from the NCI’s Dr. John Flanigan

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) presented Dr. Rachel Pearline with its Second Annual Global Cancer Research Humanitarian Award. Dr. Pearline was a third-year UCSF medical oncology fellow when she died of stage-IV gastric cancer at age 38. The award was presented in recognition of Rachel’s unwavering commitment to global cancer care, in awe of her indomitable spirit, and on behalf of the communities worldwide that remember and miss her today.

Dr. John Flanagan, Senior Advisor for Non-Communicable Diseases at the NCI’s Center for Global Health, presented the award to Rachel’s father, Donald Pearline, and sister, Sarah Pearline, at the 4th Annual Symposium on Global Cancer Research on April 8, 2016. Following the presentation, the NCI announced a lectureship to be held at all future annual Symposium meetings and titled the Pearline Humanitarian Award Lecture in Rachel’s honor.
