World Cancer Day 2025: Empowering the Future of Global Cancer Care

Today on World Cancer Day 2025, the Global Cancer Program celebrates the power of education, training, and mentorship to empower collaborators around the world. Listen to the voices of the Global Cancer Program here.

GCP reaffirms its commitment to strengthening cancer care worldwide through education, training, and mentorship. By working closely with partners in Tanzania, Latin America, Vietnam, and beyond, the program is empowering clinicians and researchers with the skills and knowledge needed to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Cancer remains one of the world’s greatest health challenges. In 2022 alone, there were approximately 20 million new cancer cases, highlighting the urgent need for stronger health systems and expanded access to care. Experts predict that by 2040, new cancer cases will top 30 million. 70% of cancer deaths occur in low-to-middle-income countries due to the uneven distribution of resources, which can be anything from affordable healthcare to diagnosing equipment.  This year, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) emphasizes the importance of people-centered care, reminding us that it is both more humane and more effective. Yet, barriers stand in their way.

The #UnitedbyUnique campaign recognizes that while each person affected by cancer has unique needs, perspectives, and experiences, they share a common goal—to lower the cancer burden, ensure successful treatment, and lead better lives with cancer. The Global Cancer Program is committed to this mission by fostering a global community of skilled professionals dedicated to equitable cancer care through education and mentorship.

From oncologist training programs in Tanzania to research collaborations in Latin America and training efforts in Vietnam, these initiatives demonstrate the transformative power of global partnerships. By equipping healthcare providers with specialized skills and fostering international cooperation, the Global Cancer Program is helping to close the care gap and create a more equitable future for cancer patients worldwide.

The Global Cancer Program calls on all cancer advocates around the world to unite and participate in World Cancer Day by continuing to invest in research, training, and mentorship. With sustained commitment and collaboration, a future where high-quality cancer care is accessible to all is within reach.
