East Africa Collaborative Scientific Symposium

In January 2017, Global Cancer Program (GCP) faculty and collaborators attended the 9th Annual UCSF East Africa Collaborative Scientific Symposium at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in Kampala, Uganda. The symposium was hosted by UCSF’s Gladstone Institute of Virology & Immunology Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and attended by Dr. Paul Volberding, GCP faculty and Gladstone Institute co-director. Research from Global Cancer Program faculty Dr. Katherine Van Loon and Dr. Jeffrey Martin were represented by their East African collaborators.

Van Loon collaborator, Dr. Msiba Selekwa of Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, presented co-authored work titled “A Pilot Study to Establish Procedures for DNA and RNA Isolation from African Esophageal Tumor Specimens” and the IDI’s Dr. Miriam Laker-Oketta presented her collaborative research with GCP faculty Jeffrey Martin on “Low Level of Kaposis’s Sarcoma-Specific Knowledge and Screening Practices among Clinicians in Uganda”.
